However, these terms are essential for this blog. I do not consider “special” to be appropriate, because these people have the right to be treated the same as everyone else.

I thought for a long time about which category this topic belongs in.
The Daily Blog was out — the topic is too specific.
“Gerry barks” doesn’t fit either, because I don’t just want to rant, even if I partly will.
“From my life” doesn’t fit either, because it doesn’t directly concern me.

In the end, I chose my Gerry’s Puppies project because this story was brought to me — and in doing so, it set a small but significant stone rolling.

After my blog post #9 someone approached me and told me a story that I first had to reflect on. It’s about people with physical or intellectual disabilities as well as psychological or cognitive impairments.

I then began collecting more stories.
I sought support, was referred onward, spoke in groups, or was allowed to present my concerns myself.
Numerous chats, phone calls, and a very large number of voice messages followed. For one week, nearly all of my free time flowed into this topic.

In the end, five stories came together:

three from people with intellectual impairments

one from a person with cognitive limitations

one from a person with a physical disability

In addition, another person shared their impressions with me, and I spoke with two people who mediate between disabled and non-disabled pups.

In order not to overload either the blog or the BarkCast, I split the cases up. Some appear only here, others only in the BarkCast, and some in both formats.

I will not name any names — even though I have permission for almost everything. Those affected will recognize themselves anyway.
Enough of the introduction.
Let’s get started.

General perception

During my time in this circle, one thing became very clear to me:
Many of these people feel alone — and abandoned.

Regardless of the type of impairment, they find it difficult to find people who truly understand them. Friendships are often rare, partnerships even rarer. Loneliness is a constant companion.

These lines are not meant to evoke pity. They get enough of that already.
What is missing is openness, respect, and genuine understanding.

Especially people with psychological issues — for example, those with a “monster in their head” — carry many worries and fears with them. Telegram groups or similar spaces are often their first and only point of contact.

What stood out to me and one conversation partner in particular:
Many groups immediately smother negativity.
“Don’t drag the group down.”
“Get professional help.”
“Do this in private.”

What’s overlooked is that some people simply don’t have any other place.

Of course, there are topics that don’t belong in groups — self-harm or suicidal thoughts, for example. But many people are simply exhausted by everyday life and want to vent. In groups where they are supposed to feel safe.

Instead, often only a picture-perfect world is maintained: fun, sex, stickers.
For a community that preaches solidarity, this is a frightening contradiction.

A little attention can be enough to catch someone again.
Sometimes it prevents a fall into the abyss.

Those affected

Case 1: ADD – the fear of addressing it

This conversation partner asked me to briefly explain the difference between ADD and ADHD.

ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. Without treatment, it is difficult to concentrate. One appears absent, empty. In his case, it occasionally manifests in physical tics or compulsive behaviors.

ADHD is the same — plus hyperactivity. Restlessness, urge to move, impulsive behavior.

Out of fear of rejection, he hardly ever talks about his disorder. And when he does, stupid remarks follow.

ADD or ADHD are not moods or phases. Therapies are lengthy, often lifelong, sometimes medication-based. Those affected work on themselves every day.

BUT (!):
There are also people who listen, ask questions, and offer support. Unfortunately, they are the minority.

Case 2: Only positive experiences

This conversation partner uses a wheelchair due to a severe physical impairment. He described the only purely positive case.

At events, he is met with respect and helpfulness. This case shows: they do exist — sincere, considerate people in this community.

Case 3: Cognitive impairments – an owner who suffers along

This owner has multiple limitations: shortness of breath, forgetfulness, occasional hyperventilation.

Because of this, he is often misjudged. Yet he is one of the warmest people I know.

What I miss is simple follow-up questions.
Neurodivergence is real — and yet it is far too often ignored or ridiculed.

Mediators

The mediator of this project is a real asset to the community. He creates understanding, defuses conflicts, and helps both those affected and those who cause harm.

Appeals

To those affected:
Not every question is an attack. Often it’s an honest offer of help.

To everyone:
Stop judging so quickly.
Approach people.
Ask questions.

Pity doesn’t help.
Acceptance does.

My closing words

Physical disabilities often receive more acceptance than psychological ones. That is wrong.

Both are real. Both deserve respect.

Behind impairments are people with needs, desires, and the same right to belonging, love, and culture as everyone else.

Thank you to everyone who supported this project.

Your Gerry

Postscript:
Are you a “special” pup yourself?
