Fortitudo - Strength
Fortitudo is not courage in the heroic sense. It is the ability to endure unpleasant realities and still act rationally. Bravery does not mean not being afraid. It means not letting fear control you.
This virtue begins within: recognising your own weaknesses without getting bogged down in them. Fortitudo accepts that pain, uncertainty and risk are part of every development. Strength means: I don't break down just because there's a fire.
Bravery is neither impulsiveness nor aggression. It is controlled determination. You make a decision, bear the consequences and don't back down at the first sign of resistance.
Fortitudo appears stable on the outside and honest on the inside. You may feel fear, doubt, shame – but you keep moving forward.
The core of this virtue is functionality: strength serves the goal, not the ego. No hunger for power, no arrogance. Just the clear attitude that some things have to be done, even if they are uncomfortable.
Fortitudo protects against retreat, paralysis and self-abandonment. It keeps the system stable when pressure arises.
I am working on this because my strength often only becomes visible when everything else is already burning. I don't just want to ‘survive’, I want to be able to make active decisions. Fortitudo helps me to understand old patterns of collapse and recovery.
