Fides - Faith

Fides does not mean blind faith. It is the virtue that creates reliability – both internally and externally. Trust begins with oneself: the ability to trust one's own principles and not constantly sabotage oneself.

Fides is a decision, not a feeling. You decide to trust a process, a person, a line of action. Not naively, but consciously. Trust involves risk – but a calculated risk.

This virtue requires clarity: who do I place my trust in? Why? What conditions apply? Fides is not boundless openness, but a conscious commitment.

In an interpersonal context, fides creates stability. Relationships only work if you can rely on each other. Mistrust destroys slowly and systematically. Trust builds slowly and systematically.

Fides also means remaining consistent. You stand by what you have promised. You are tangible, not erratic.

On a personal level, fides means not falling into cynicism. It is the decision not to write off possibilities just because they might fail. Fides keeps options open.

I deal with this because trust is often the first thing that breaks down when I am overworked. And without trust, everything becomes unstable: relationships, projects, myself. I want to strengthen the foundation instead of just treating the symptoms.
